Ryan Graduate Fellowships

Made possible by a generous donation from Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan, Ryan Graduate Fellowships support outstanding graduate students dedicated to the exploration of fundamental nanoscale science and to advancing this knowledge into practical applications of benefit to society. The interdisciplinary nature of nanotechnology makes these fellowships make these fellowships appropriate for graduate students from a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines.

In addition to their research, Ryan Fellows are part of a community of scholars and have unique educational and networking opportunities. These include: Quarterly lunch or dinner meetings; annual attendance at a Northwestern football game with a pre-game tailgate party; participation in the IIN Seminar Series that offers opportunities to host and attend a private meeting with leading nanotechnology scientists; and the chance to conduct short-term, collaborative research in laboratories around the world.

Applications

Annually, there are two competitions for Ryan Graduate Fellowships. The first is held in February/March and is available only to incoming students who have applied to Northwestern for graduate studies. The second is held in May each year and is open to current Northwestern graduate students. Program departments nominate incoming students for consideration and current Northwestern applicants must be nominated by their faculty advisors and their departments.

The Ryan Fellowship Selection Committee (a group of Northwestern faculty members appointed by the IIN Director and representing different schools and departments) carefully review applications and select each year’s current and incoming cohort of Ryan Fellows.
