Xiaodong Chen

2023 Kabiller Young Investigator Award

The recipient of this year’s $10,000 Kabiller Young Investigator Award is Xiaodong Chen.

As the President’s Chair Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Chen has made significant contributions to developing nanomaterials, nanotools and nanotechnologies.

“It is my great honor to receive this award, a recognition that underscores the significance of my research in the field of nanoscience and nanomedicine. Over the last few years, we have invented various patent-pending technologies in biosensing, flexible devices, neural interfaces and health care, and this award is a testament to the scientific impact of our innovations. As we continue to push the frontiers of nanotechnology within the global scientific community, I am excited to continue developing transformative solutions that can benefit society.”

As a Professor of Chemistry and Medicine at Nanyang Technological University, Professor Chen’s research endeavors span a wide spectrum of areas. He focuses on developing soft materials for flexible devices, energy storage, and healthcare applications. His innovative work encompasses interactive materials and devices, integrated nano-bio interfaces, and cyber-human interfaces and systems. His pioneering research has led to his publication of over 280 high-profile articles in esteemed journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Electronics, and Angewandte Chemie, among others.

Beyond his academic excellence, Professor Chen has demonstrated a profound commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists. His mentorship has empowered numerous students and researchers, and more than 40 of his group’s alumni have secured academic positions at various universities globally. His dedication to teaching has earned him the prestigious Teacher of the Year Award, reflecting his passion and commitment to education.

Furthermore, Professor Chen’s contributions to the scientific community extend worldwide. He has organized multiple international research symposia and workshops, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. He is the Editor-in-Chief of ACS Nano and is also actively involved in editorial roles in other journals such as ACS Materials Letters and Advanced Materials. These roles showcase his leadership and influence in shaping the direction of scientific research.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Professor Chen has received numerous awards and honors, including the Singapore NRF Investigatorship and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
